Located in the Hohoe Municipal District
The Ewe people originally fled from tyranny in Benin. A conflict resulted in them sharpening stones to make weapons for battle. The battle was averted, but those oppressed took refuge in the hills. For many years the 'Likpes' lived in the caves on the modern border with Togo and near to the Wli Waterfalls.
8 km north of the Wli falls one can find the Likpe caves that served as a hideout during the Ashanti war. Since the 1980's the caves are de-mystified and open for tourists.
There are six ancestral caves are 20 meter below surface and are accessible separately. The hike is physically demanding and needs walking boots. The views are spectacular. There is also a side trip to the beautiful Wadjakli waterfall.
